The Fragmentation Gap
17% of the metro lives inside city limits.
What the Guide Was Made Of
64 interest tags across 50 of 50 recommendations — a pick can carry more than one. Shares are of tags, not of recommendations, and describe what this guide surfaced rather than where the days went.

About This Guide
Salt Lake City-proper primary; all picks fall within city limits or immediately adjacent neighborhoods (Sugar House, Trolley Square, 9th & 9th, Central Ninth) given the compact urban core, with the sole exception of Antelope Island State Park (natural-attraction balance-rule pick, ~40 min drive via causeway).
What the Guide Looked For and Didn't Find
Category 10 carries four picks, not five. Beyond Make Salt Lake, 801 Labs, and Squarewave Sound, no additional standalone hackerspace or electronics-repair collective with published public hours turned up in this session's research -- Craft Lake City DIY Festival rounds the category out as an annual event rather than a fixed space. Notably, this is still a stronger showing than Boise's four picks in the same category on this trip, which lacked an equivalent to Squarewave Sound entirely.
Corrections & Live-Status Caveats
Ken Sanders Rare Books' current street address could not be confirmed from available sources this session -- the shop is known to have relocated before. Check kensandersbooks.com or call ahead before visiting.
Squarewave Sound's Yelp listing was marked CLOSED as of a June 2025 snapshot, but the shop's own website (squarewavesound.com) still lists current abbreviated hours (Wed–Fri 12–6pm, Sat 12–5pm) and describes itself as operating part-time with appointments available. Sources conflict -- call or email ahead to confirm before visiting.
Cottonwood Mall, the SLC Punk! filming location for Stevo's monologue scene, has been demolished and redeveloped; it can no longer be visited as filmed.
DoDIY (dodiy.org/usa/ut) tracks Utah's all-ages/DIY punk show listings and is a useful standing resource beyond this guide's fixed venue picks.

Ranked by direction requests — the only measure of emphasis the export carries, and truncated to roughly the top ten per city, so this is where the days went most, not everywhere. Provenance is matched after the fact, not recorded at the time: the export has no per-item save timestamps and the lists were edited during the trips, so a place saved while standing in it cannot be told from one saved before leaving. “On my own list” is therefore an upper bound, and “found there” a floor.
Pop Culture & Pilgrimage
Not what it seems
Dumb and Dumber's plot is set in Aspen, Colorado, and most visitors assume it was filmed there. It was almost entirely shot around the Wasatch Front instead -- Park City's Main Street doubles for Aspen throughout.
SLC Punk! (1998)
Public high school still operating; exterior/hallway shots used for the fictional school. Confrontation scene shot on the historic quad. Heroin Bob's funeral sequence filmed here; still an active Catholic cathedral, open to visitors. Used for the film's LSD sequence. Site of Stevo's punk-rock monologue; the mall was demolished and redeveloped, so this location can no longer be visited as filmed.
High School Musical (2006)
All three films used East High's real hallways, cafeteria, and gym (Troy's 'Wildcats' are fictional -- East High's real team is the Leopards). A functioning public school; call ahead to arrange a tour.
The Sandlot (1993)
The dirt lot behind several private homes on Glenrose Drive; still privately owned by the residents, so it's viewable from the street only, not enterable.
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Interiors shot at Intermountain Studios in Orem (built by the Osmonds); the frozen mini-bike arrival scene was shot on Main Street in Park City, not Aspen, CO, where the film is set.
