About This Guide

Las Vegas-proper and unincorporated Clark County Valley (Henderson, Summerlin, Paradise) treated as one functional city, since the Strip itself and much of the built-up valley sit outside Las Vegas city-proper limits — flagged in population.note rather than silently conflated.

What the Guide Looked For and Didn't Find

Bookstores

The mandatory anarchist/radical/infoshop bookstore search turned up no Las Vegas storefront — no equivalent of Salt Lake City's Boing! Anarchist Collective or Oklahoma City's Literati Press co-op. The city's leftist political infrastructure runs through the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 (see sights) rather than a bookstore-anchored infoshop scene.

DIY Electronics / Maker

Category 10 carries 2 picks, not 5. Unlike Salt Lake City (Squarewave Sound) or Oklahoma City (Keeley Electronics), Las Vegas does not appear to have a currently operating dedicated synth/pedal boutique or electronics-surplus storefront — repeated searches surfaced only national chains (Guitar Center). SYN Shop is the one genuine, verifiable DIY-electronics anchor; Cowtown Guitars, the closest historical analogue, closed in 2019. Padding to five would misrepresent the city.

Corrections & Live-Status Caveats

The original 50¢ Golden Gate Hotel shrimp cocktail was discontinued in 2017 when Du-par's closed; owner Derek Stevens briefly revived it in 2019 and it now lives on at his Circa Resort instead of the Golden Gate.

Cowtown Guitars, once a nationally known vintage-guitar landmark in the downtown Arts District, closed in 2019. Listed for historical context only, not as a visitable pick.

Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival runs Memorial Day weekend (late May), well outside this trip's Oct 9–13, 2025 window. Included as a scene-context citation, not a bookable October activity.

Fremont Country Club's current booking calendar could not be directly verified this run (site fetch blocked) — confirm lineup before visiting.

Ranked by direction requests — the only measure of emphasis the export carries, and truncated to roughly the top ten per city, so this is where the days went most, not everywhere. Provenance is matched after the fact, not recorded at the time: the export has no per-item save timestamps and the lists were edited during the trips, so a place saved while standing in it cannot be told from one saved before leaving. “On my own list” is therefore an upper bound, and “found there” a floor.

Pop Culture & Pilgrimage

Casino (1995)

Scorsese's crew used the garage next door as a production studio. Salvaged shell-shaped lobby, relocated and now serves as the Neon Museum's visitor center; appeared in the film. Demolished 2015; used as a filming location.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

A filming location for the cult classic. Owners refused filming permission; production built its own version rather than shooting on location.

Ocean's Eleven (2001)

Primary filming location — casino floor, botanical gardens, art gallery, Dale Chihuly glass lobby ceiling, and the fountain finale.

Anora (2024)

Palme d'Or and Best Picture winner (5 Oscars total). Filmed here and on Fremont Street; plot centers on an impulsive Vegas elopement. Filming location.

The Hangover (2009)

Filming location. Filming location, also used for Rain Man (1988) and Hangover Part III (2013).

Mars Attacks! (1996)

Filming location.
