What the Guide Was Made Of
118 interest tags across 52 of 52 recommendations — a pick can carry more than one. Shares are of tags, not of recommendations, and describe what this guide surfaced rather than where the days went.

About This Guide
Oklahoma City-proper primary; out-of-city picks (e.g. Nic's fried onion burger lineage in El Reno) included only where explicitly noted as a regional-dish origin story, not presented as in-city.
What the Guide Looked For and Didn't Find
The mandatory anarchist/radical/infoshop search returned no dedicated storefront in Oklahoma City — OKC does not appear in radical-guide.com's bookstore-collective directory. The nearest true infoshop is Red Scare Infoshop in Tulsa, roughly 100 miles east. OKC's equivalent infrastructure is cooperative rather than anarchist — Literati Press became Oklahoma's first community-owned bookshop when The Writers Co-op began taking ownership in 2025 — plus OKC DSA working groups, which organize but do not run a public storefront. The distinction is the finding: a red-state capital produces co-ops and mutual-aid networks where a coastal city produces infoshops.
Category 10 carries four picks, not five. OKC has a world-class boutique electronics manufacturer in Keeley but no dedicated synth shop, no hackerspace with published public open-hours, and at least one makerspace (Prototek) whose operating status could not be freshly confirmed this run. Padding to five would misrepresent the city.
Corrections & Live-Status Caveats
Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza was dedicated November 3, 2025 — after this trip's Oct 20–22, 2025 visit window. The finished bronze installation would not yet have been standing during the actual stay; earlier coverage in that window would only show design-approval renderings, not the completed monument.
Nappy Roots Books has relocated. Older directory listings show 3705 N Springlake Dr; the shop's own announcement gives 3621 N Lottie.
Split-T, the OKC restaurant credited with inventing the Theta burger, is closed. Order at Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler or The Garage instead.
39th Street Records (2131 NW 39th St) appears as permanently closed in at least one vinyl directory while still listed elsewhere. Call ahead.
Prototek OKC's public web presence has been stale for roughly a decade despite active directory listings. Confirm operation before visiting.

Ranked by direction requests — the only measure of emphasis the export carries, and truncated to roughly the top ten per city, so this is where the days went most, not everywhere. Provenance is matched after the fact, not recorded at the time: the export has no per-item save timestamps and the lists were edited during the trips, so a place saved while standing in it cannot be told from one saved before leaving. “On my own list” is therefore an upper bound, and “found there” a floor.
Pop Culture & Pilgrimage
Not what it seems
Twister (1996), August: Osage County (2013) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) are commonly attributed to Oklahoma City but were shot elsewhere in the state — Wakita/Ponca City for the first, and Pawhuska/Bartlesville/Osage County for the latter two. Only the 2024 Twisters sequel is genuinely an OKC production.
Twisters (2024)
Downtown OKC doubled for New York City. Streets were closed for 19 hours in May 2023 and dressed with scaffolds, subway signage and taxi cabs for the scene where Kate relocates to NYC. Converted former convention center; served as the production base for interior sets and controlled sequences. Played the New York City coffee shop where Kate meets Javi. Doubled for an NYC branch of the National Weather Service.
Elizabethtown (2005)
American elm that survived the 1995 bombing. Outdoor memorial is free and open 24 hours.
Rain Man (1988)
Pivotal sequences shot in El Reno — the same town that produced the fried onion burger — and in Guthrie's Victorian downtown.
Bringing Up Bobby (2011)
Milla Jovovich as a con-artist mother; filmed partly in OKC.
Born here: Ralph Ellison
literature · Author of Invisible Man. Grew up in the segregated Deep Deuce district surrounded by jazz and blues; taught under bandleader Zelia N. Breaux.
Born here: Jim Thompson
